The words of Christ: “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matt. 5:(27-28)
Here John Paul II moves on from Christ’s words about the “Beginning”, about God’s intentions for his creation. We are "historical men and women”, people who do not enjoy the innocence of the original state, because of the Fall or Adam and Eve. After that sin, by which the tempter cast doubt on God’s love, the Spousal meaning of the human body became obscured. No longer were we able to live in the original innocence of the Father’s plan, but were susceptible to the three-fold concupiscence from 1 John 2: 15-17: “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life”.
One result of the Fall was the origin of shame, which is s kind of protection for the body’s spousal meaning. No longer were the original couple free to relate to each other in love. By turning away from the Creator’s love they corrupted their own ability to. love freely. Lust and concupiscence crippled their freedom to love.
Pope John Paul II calls for a new ethos, a set of values internalized in the human heart, system of values to live by.
